JONES BILL TO GIVE MARINE CORPS EQUAL STATUS IN DEPARTMENT NAME GAINS 362 COSPONSORS
Legislation Would Redesignate Department of the Navy as Department of the Navy & Marine Corps
WASHINGTON, D.C. – H.R. 24 – legislation introduced in January by Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) to re-designate the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps – has gained 362 cosponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives. H.R. 24 has more cosponsors than any other bill or resolution to be introduced in the House this year, except for one.
In each Congress since 2001, Jones has introduced legislation aimed at giving the United States Marine Corps the recognition it deserves as one of the official branches of the military. The language of H.R. 24 was recently included in H.R. 2647, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2010, which the House Armed Services Committee unanimously approved on June 17, 2009. This is the eighth year in a row that the language of H.R. 24 has been included in the House version of the NDAA, but each year the language has been stripped in the Senate.
“I want to thank my colleagues in the House for supporting the effort to give the men and women of the Marine Corps the recognition they deserve,” Congressman Jones said. “This is a matter that is very close to my heart. The Marine Corps is an equal member of a team that deserves equal recognition. I’m very encouraged by the support for H.R. 24 among so many of my House colleagues.”
“This legislation is not about changing the responsibilities of the secretary, reallocating resources between the Navy and Marine Corps or altering the course of their missions,” Jones continued. “Rather, it is about showing the nation the true meaning of the department and recognizing the overall importance of the Marine Corps to our national security.”
Over the past several years, the language of H.R. 24 has been endorsed by several former Navy secretaries, Marine Corps commandants, the Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fleet Reserve Association and many other individuals and groups.

Hope the bill will pass we need to be recognized as an official branch of the military.

I feel that this change is terribly overdue. The Marine Corps has lost far more Marines in combat than the Navy has. And I would like to see the Marines recognized as a separate branch from the Navy. I’ve heard Navy men call our fine fighting men (Marines) pussy’s. I was a Woman Marine and now a member of the MCL. and the D.A.V. Our men are the finest! ! ! The Marines should have its own ships, hospitals and medical personel.
Most people I know do not realize that the Marine Corps is even a branch of the Navy. When I tell them that, they are really angry and say our Marines deserve better.
I was wounded at the Battle of Hue City in 1968. I support
the name Untied States Department of t he Navy and Marine
Corps. Sound really great.

Just get it done! For all those in Washington that want to help the MARINE CORPS, thank you, for all of those that oppose, get the hell out of the way. GOD Bless ALL of our armed forces!

I have always been proud of being a Marine and continue to honor
the Corps by being a life member of the Marine Corps League and
also The Military Order of Devil Dogs. I believe it is time that we
are recognized as a separate branch of the military.

The Marine Corps needs to be recognized as an official branch of the military – not part of the Navy, not part of any other service but a bonified stand alone branch. If this is the first step, so be it, but I won’t be satisfied until I see our magnificant Corps receive the honor it is due!!!
I SAY WE ARE THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS AND I AM INDIGNANT THAT THE THOUGHT OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BECOMING A PART OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY!
LOOK AT THE FACES ON THE POSTER. WE “ARE” THE FEW..THE PROUD..THE BRAVE.
WE ADAPT AND WE IMPROVISE AND WE “ACT”! SO CONGRESSMAN WALTER B. JONES YOU ARE VERY WRONG ABOUT INCORPORATING US WITH THE NAVY! SHAME ON YOU SIR!
I have thought for a long time that the Marines should be seperate from the Navy. Thank God for our military and especially the USMC. Semper Fi!

I hope in my lifetime to see the Marine Corps recognized as its own branch of the military
SemperFi….
It has been a long time coming……………….
As a person that voluntarily served in our U.S. MARINE CORPS during Viet Nam, I fully support the official name change. Per capita, more Marines give their lives for the U.S.A. than our Navy Brothern. GOD bless all of our Armed Forces.
This sounds like a good idea to me.
I would like to see the Marine Corps. recognized as an offical branch of the military. Thank you Robert Gripps
