The USMC was established by America's Founding Fathers as an integral part of the US Navy, and the Marine Corps will always be the smaller -- elite -- part of the greater whole. Historically, Marines are Naval infantry -- with roots going back to antiquity. The relationship of the Marine Corps to the Navy must be ever cherished, never demeaned. I have a Daughter in the Marines and have two son laws on active duty as well. Yes we need to have our own service seperate from the Dept of the Navy. I would like to see the Marine Corps recognized as an offical branch of the Armed Forces for every Marine Brother and Sister we lost in combat.
