Gen. Anthony Zinni, former commander of U.S. Central Command, spoke at a press conference Feb. 25 on the need to change the name of the Department of the Navy to the “Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.” He said the time has come for the Marine Corps to finally get the recognition it well deserves.

“This is not just a gesture of kindness toward the Marine Corps,” Zinni said. “It’s a recognition of change…We started as continental Marines aboard ship. We’ve come a long way. We now fight side by side in major land campaigns.”

Zinni said the Marine Corps is the only branch that does not have recognition in any military department.

“It does not take away from the naval tradition…but it does recognize who we are today.”
