I agree that the Marine Corps should have their own. When I called just the other day, it was the Navy office, but they said oh you need to call the Marines. Well they are very different, Marines do very different things than the Navy does. Any Marine would tell you that. It is something that has been started, to make that change, I am all for all the military, but the Marines are special to me. My brother gave his life in the Marines. The Few The Proud, Semper Fi!
I served with the First Marine Brigade (‘68-’70) as an FMF Corpsman. I served honorably and with pride in being with the Marines. I was more proud of my membership with the Marines than the Navy. I was also proud of keeping a family tradition going regarding joining the Navy and therefore I am proud of having served in the Navy, but I liked being with the Marines and taking care of them the most during my military service. There are several (probably many) reasons why I liked being with the Marines, but there’s one part I still recall very well. As a “doc”, if you took care of your Marines, they took care of you. That is a special situation and bond in the human experience, one you never forget. If you’ve ever been given that gift, it is something that’s always cherished. To me, there’s no question that it should be the Dept. of the Navy and the United States Marine Corp.

This is retarded. If we as Marines don’t know why our letterhead say’s “Department of the Navy” then our own hubris has blinded us. Marines have been “Soldiers of the Sea” and “Naval Infantry” for our entire existence and I am proud of our honored place within the United States Navy. We exist because we are a functioning piece of the Navy and we are not the Navy’s reason for existence. The Army has it’s own history of successful amphibious operations that could justify why the Nation doesn’t need a Corps of Marines. If we remove ourselves from underneath the protective umbrella of the Navy then we actually would become the “second land army” which is a term that spells death for our institution.
Finally, think about that term “Corps.” We weren’t named the “Marine Corps” no reason. We are a “Corps” of specialists within a larger, parent service and have been since November 10th, 1775.

This effort does not seek to remove the Marine Corps from the Navy but simply to recognize it in the official name of the executive department…
I am proud to say that the best times of my life were the years I served in the USMC. Marines Barracks Bangor WA was my first duty station. Then I had the honor of serving with 2nd Bn 9th Mar for the rest of my tour. I enjoyed serving with the best folks that live on this earth. Kick’n ass and takin’ names. Semper Fi
My father did 9 years in the Army and 6 in the Corps, but until the day he died I thought he did all 15 in the Marines. He LOVED the Marine Corps, and it’s time for the first in and last to leave to get the recognition it deserves.
Marines dont need letterhead to serve with honor and distinction.
the letter shouldnt come from the sec of the navy, it should come from the CO of the corps.

i have had two uncles, my father and my brother join this proud brotherhood that is the United States Marine Corps. I am also joining the Marine Corps in a couple month. If I were to die while in the service to my country, i want my mom to get a letter that has the Eagle Globe and Anchor seal on it. i also want it to say that i served my country with honor
There shouldn’t be a need for this. Seems the USMC just needs to do it.. they are a Department of the Navy- so declairing Department of the Navy should be all inclusive. This should mean all the Corps has to do is get on the ball!

I always remember a saying said in the 80s. The Marine Corps does not exist because America needs it, it exists because Americans want it.
We are a Naval Service and always will be. If we lose that focus, then why not be just be another corps of the Army. I fear that will happen if we get wrapped around this issue.
Marines’ identity should not be tied by the name of the department its is established under, but by its deeds.
Have viewed website such as Congress.org to see status of HR@$ in 2010 and this bill has been submitted many years, but is stays in committee. Why does it stay in committee? Is it a convenient method of Senators and Representatives to say they support us, but without doing something about it? Cheap talk by them!
Some of you may have seen on tv or in newspapers lately about the Marine who was killed in Afghanistan by an IED. He was CPL Adam Jones, of Germantown, OH, 3/2 India Co, Weapons Platoon. That was my little boy. I received many, many condolences. One from our Congressman, The Secretary of the Navy,Commanding Generals from Camp Lejeune,NC, Commanding General in Afghanistan, but not one letter head from the U S Marine Corp. My son deserved that, he earned that. And the American people should make that happen.

Why not ask for a “Department of the Marine Corps”? If the US Marine Corps want to be recognized, as if nobody knew they existed then make them their own “Department” and not just added to the title with the Navy. The answer to that question is easy, money and manning. Why do you think they say “the few, the proud”, the Navy provides Sailors to the Marine Corps with corpsman, doctors, nurses, chaplains and many more personnel. The Navy provides ships, schools, bases and many more items that cost a lot of tax payers’ money. If we do add Marine Corps to the title then why not add the SEABEES to the title as well. They are not like your typical Sailors in the Navy but work within the Navy, as do the Marines. Do the SEABEES not deserved to be recognized as well for being a part of the sea going force of the US? How would you define the word Marine?

We have a department in the US that is of or pertaining to the sea, the Department of the Navy. I feel that the Navy and Marine Corps team has worked well together and done more for the freedoms and people of this country than any other department. The Marine Corps is a department within the Navy and just ask a Marine what department that is, the “Men’s Department”. If you put them in the title then the Marine Corps could no longer say that. The few, the proud; Once a Marine, always a Marine, I guess that’s not enough anymore. Is it not enough to serve your country, I guess not for the forgotten Marine Corps.
My Brother was in the Marines in Korea and I served in the
Republic of Vietnam in 67/ 68 also with the Marines.
We are proud of the Marines Tradition and We are
Preserving it as well as promoting its Heritage and
Interest of the United States Marine Corps.

40 years ago, I was proud to be a United States Marine. Our tradition is amphibious & young Marines await orders to the Fleet. I hope & pray we remain in the Naval Service.

I agree with Gunny. The Marine Corps needs to be recognized. My father was a Marine for 22 years here on earth, and now in heaven. He was very proud of the Marine Corps. Semper Fi.
